Knabenschiessen in Zurich 2023

11 September 2023

Knabenschiessen(Boy shooting) often causes some confusion among the uninformed. For this popular public festival does not entail shooting boys. Quite the contrary: at this rifle shooting competition, local boys – and for number of years now, girls too – have the opportunity to test and demonstrate their shooting skills. This tradition harks back to the 17th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1656, when around 150 boys took part in a shooting competition known as “Knaben Schiesset”.

The modern-day, annual “Knabenschiessen” exists in its present form since 1899 and is organized by the City of Zurich Rifle Association in Albisgütli. Since then, the festival has been held in conjunction with Zurich’s largest annual public festival, and from Saturday to Monday attracts countless visitors with its varied culinary delights and many market stands and amusement rides.

Since the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation in 1991, girls have also been allowed to participate in this competition. However, the rule that only boys and girls resident in the city and canton of Zurich are allowed to shoot is still upheld to this day. The festival, on the other hand, is naturally open to all visitors from near and far.

Zürich

Zürich

Zürich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zürich. It is located in north-central Switzerland, at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich. Zürich is a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Zurich Airport and its main railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.

Permanently settled for over 2,000 years, Zürich was founded by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. During the Middle Ages, Zürich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Huldrych Zwingli.

The official language of Zürich is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect, Zürich German.

Many museums and art galleries can be found in the city, including the Swiss National Museum and Kunsthaus. Schauspielhaus Zürich is considered to be one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world.

Zurich Airport is located less than 10 km northeast of the city in Kloten. Zurich Airport has its own railway station, which is located underground. It is directly connected to Zürich and most of the major Swiss cities. Zurich Airport is served by more than 60 passenger airlines from around the world. It is also served by one cargo airline and is a hub for Swiss International Air Lines. There is also an airfield in Dübendorf.

The most famous districts for Nightlife are the Niederdorf in the old town with bars, restaurants, lounges, hotels, clubs, etc. and a lot of fashion shops for a young and stylish public.
